After graduating from the University of South Alabama with a degree in meteorology, Sommer decided to pursue a career in education. She started her teaching career at Semmes Middle School and eventually received her alternative certification in Secondary Science. She taught both 7th and 8th grade sciences at Semmes Middle School for 13 years. During her time at Semmes, Sommer served as both the science fair coordinator and science department chair. She joined the Environmental Studies Center team as a resource teacher in 2020.
Sommer is a mother of two boys. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and cooking.
